4 ways to avoid Frontier baggage fees

Ok, you've scored that cheap ticket on Frontier, but you need to be careful that you don't end up paying much more at the airport for baggage fees. In addition to having higher than average checked baggage fees, Frontier is one of the airlines that will charge you for bringing a carry-on! Here are four ways to minimize what you pay at the airport:

  • Fit under the seat

Frontier will charge up to $60 to bring a carry-on unless it will fit under the seat in front of you. Your best bet is to use a backpack or large purse, but you can also use this small rolling suitcase that is specifically designed to fit under the seat.

  • Weigh your bags

If you can't fit all of your stuff under your seat, you might get more bang for your buck by checking a bag with Frontier than paying for an overhead carry-on, even though it's less convenient. If you do check a bag, pay for it ahead of time and use a handheld digital luggage scale to make sure it's below 50lbs where the really expensive oversize fees kick in.

  • Get creative

If you don't mind looking like a bit of a weirdo, we've got an idea for you: get this 26 pocket vest that claims to have pockets for all of your gear including an iPad!  We're not saying don't do this, we're just saying don't let your friends see you do this.

  • Ship bags ahead

Not having to check bags is obviously more convenient, and with the higher-than-average Frontier baggage fees, shipping luggage right to your destination can be less expensive as well. With Lugless, rates start as low as $15. Get an instant quote to ship your bags and see how much money (and time) you can save!

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a plan before you get to the airport when your option will be limited (and expensive!).

Frontier Airlines carry-on baggage fees

While one personal item per passenger is allowed for free, Frontier charges a fee for all carry-on luggage. Carry on bags must not exceed 10" x 16" x 24" in size and 35lbs in weight. Bags exceeding this size must be checked at the gate at a cost of $60.

Frontier Airlines checked baggage fees

Frontier baggage fees for bags weighing up to 50lbs and measuring 62″ (L+W+H) or less are charged for the first and second checked bags. Checked baggage fees range from $30 to $55 depending on whether the fee is pre-paid or paid at the airport.

Frontier Airlines excess baggage fees

Checking excess baggage, meaning three or more bags per passenger, on Frontier Airlines flights will cost $85-$95 per bag.

Frontier Airlines overweight baggage fees

Overweight baggage is considered any bag weighing more than 50lbs. The fees for checking overweight baggage on Frontier are charged in addition to any standard, excess or oversized baggage fees. Bags weighing more than 99lbs are not accepted as checked luggage on Frontier.

Frontier Airlines oversized baggage fees

Most bags with a sum of length, width, and height of greater than 62 inches will be considered oversized. Frontier oversized baggage fees are charged in addition to any standard, excess, or overweight fee. Bags measuring greater than 109" in total dimensions will not be accepted as checked luggage.

Luggage shipping alternative

Instead of paying Frontier's checked baggage fees, you can ship your luggage ahead with LugLess. For as little as $20, LugLess allows you to generate a FedEx or UPS shipping label, which you can use to attach to your bag and send it directly to your destination anywhere in the US.
