Moving across the country?
Ship the boxes, skip the truck.
Most of what you are paying a mover to haul is boxes. Drop those at any FedEx or UPS location with LugLess from $15 a box, and only pay a mover for the furniture, if you even need one.
The short answer
For a long distance move, shipping your boxes by parcel carrier is the cheapest option when you are moving belongings rather than furniture.
Full-service movers run roughly $1,500 to $20,000 and moving containers $3,000 to $8,000, because you are paying for truck space whether you fill it or not. Shipping boxes is priced per box, so a studio's worth of clothes, books, bedding and kitchen gear often lands in the low hundreds. LugLess box shipping starts at $15 per box: you drop the boxes at a FedEx or UPS location and they are delivered to your new address.
The tradeoff is real and worth saying plainly: boxes and suitcases ship, sofas and mattresses do not. If your move is mostly furniture, you still need a mover or a truck.

When shipping boxes beats hiring movers
The math flips on furniture. Here is the honest line.
Ship your boxes if
- You are moving out of an apartment, dorm or furnished rental
- Your furniture is staying, selling or getting replaced
- You are flying to the new place and cannot check 12 bags
- You want to move in waves instead of one truck day
- You are moving for a job or a semester and want a predictable per-box price
- You got a mover quote that felt absurd for what you actually own
You still need a mover if
- You are moving a sofa, bed frame, mattress or dining table
- You have a full house of furniture across several rooms
- Individual items go over 100 lbs
- You need someone to pack the boxes for you
- You are moving a piano, safe, or anything that needs equipment
Plenty of people do both: a small mover or truck for the four big pieces, boxes shipped separately. That is usually the cheapest version of a long distance move.
Best way to ship boxes when moving
Sort before you price. Anything that fits in a sturdy box ships and furniture does not, so decide what is selling, staying or getting rebought before you quote anything. Then work in order.
- Weigh and measure two packed boxes so you are quoting real numbers instead of guesses.
- Pack tight. Billable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so a half empty large box costs more than a full medium one.
- Keep each box under 90 lbs billable to stay clear of the Large Package surcharge.
- Quote the whole set at once, then ship in waves as you pack, since pricing is per box.
- Drop off at any FedEx or UPS location and track each box separately.
Every price depends on the size and billable weight of the box, how far it is going and how fast you need it there.
How much it costs to ship boxes across the country
Box shipping is priced per box, so the total scales with what you actually send instead of the size of a truck.
Four things move the price: the size and weight of the box, how far it is going, how fast you need it there, and whether there is a drop-off location near you. A well-packed medium box crossing a few states costs far less than an overstuffed one going coast to coast overnight.
Billable weight is what you actually pay on
Carriers charge on billable weight, which is the greater of the box's real weight and its dimensional weight. The formula is length x width x height divided by 139. A big light box of bedding can bill higher than a small heavy box of books, which is why packing tight saves real money.
See the full size and weight guide for how billable weight is calculated and where the surcharges start.
Ways to pay less per box
- Fill boxes completely so you are not shipping air
- Use medium boxes for books and heavy items, large for light bulky things
- Ship ground when you have the lead time
- Drop off at a FedEx or UPS location instead of adding a pickup
- Keep each box under 90 lbs billable to avoid the Large Package surcharge
What is included
- A prepaid label for every box
- Tracking on each box separately
- Delivery to your new address on FedEx or UPS
- Email and text updates, including on delivery
Value Protection is a paid add-on, not included. You can buy it at checkout to cover each package up to $3,500. An unboxed suitcase is capped at $200 for damage. See what you can ship for exclusions.
Size and weight limits before you pack
Check these against your biggest box now, not after it is taped shut.
LugLess box shipping limits. Measure length plus girth as length + (2 x width) + (2 x height).
| Limit | Threshold | What happens past it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard label weight | Up to 75 billable lbs per item | 75 to 90 lbs ships as Oversize, billed for the overage per pound |
| Recommended max | Under 90 billable lbs per item | Stays clear of Large Package pricing |
| Hard ceiling | 100 lbs per item | Handling charges up to $1,500 per package |
| Large Package threshold | Over 90 billable lbs, or length plus girth over 130 in, or length over 96 in | $170 surcharge and a 90 lb minimum billable weight |
| Maximum size | Length plus girth up to 165 in | Cannot ship. Fees can reach $2,000 per package. |
If a box is close to a threshold, split it into two. Two mid-size boxes almost always beat one oversize box.

When to ship your boxes
Timing is the part people get wrong, and it is the easiest part to get right.
Ship before you go
Send everything you will not need in the last week, then travel light. Your boxes are waiting or arriving right behind you. This is the version most people want.
Ship after you arrive
Works when someone can pack and drop off for you, or when your new place is not ready yet. Just make sure a person can receive the boxes at the destination.
Your quote shows the delivery date for each service level before you book, so you can work backward from your move-in date instead of guessing. Book early during summer moving season and the late-August school rush, when carrier volume is heaviest.
Frequently asked questions about shipping boxes for a move
Is it cheaper to ship boxes or hire movers?
Shipping boxes is cheaper when you are not moving furniture. Full-service movers typically run $1,500 to $20,000 because you pay for truck space and labor regardless of how full it is. Box shipping is priced per box and starts at $15, so a move of clothes, books, bedding and kitchen gear usually costs a fraction of a mover quote. Once large furniture is in the picture, a mover or truck wins.
How much does it cost to ship a box across the country?
LugLess box shipping starts at $15 per box. The exact price depends on the size and weight of the box, the distance, and the delivery speed you choose. Carriers charge on billable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, calculated as length x width x height divided by 139. A tightly packed medium box costs meaningfully less than a half-empty large one going the same distance.
What is the cheapest way to ship boxes across the country?
For belongings rather than furniture, per box parcel shipping is usually the cheapest way to send boxes across the country. Price is driven by billable weight, the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is length x width x height divided by 139. Packing tight and using the smallest box that fits is the biggest lever you control. Keep each box under 90 lbs billable to avoid the Large Package surcharge. Once real furniture is involved the math flips and a rental truck you drive, or freight on pallets, will beat parcel shipping. LugLess box shipping starts at $15 per box and compares FedEx and UPS rates.
What is the cheapest way to move long distance?
The cheapest long distance move is usually a hybrid: sell or leave the bulky furniture, ship your boxes by parcel carrier, and travel with only what you need for the first week. If you must move furniture, a rental truck you drive yourself is typically the cheapest way to move it, at roughly $1,000 to $3,500 plus fuel, with boxes shipped separately so you are not paying for truck space you do not need.
How many boxes should I ship when moving?
There is no cap. Each box gets its own label and tracking number, so you can ship two or twenty and follow each one separately. Most studio and one-bedroom moves land somewhere between eight and twenty boxes once furniture is out of the equation. Because pricing is per box, it costs nothing extra to ship them in waves as you pack.
How heavy can a moving box be when you ship it?
A standard LugLess label covers up to 75 billable pounds per item. We recommend staying under 90 pounds billable, and 100 pounds is the hard ceiling. Past 90 billable pounds, or when length plus girth exceeds 130 inches, the box is classed as a Large Package and carries a $170 surcharge plus a 90 pound minimum billable weight. Two mid-size boxes are almost always cheaper than one oversize one.
Should I ship my boxes before or after I move?
Ship before you go in most cases. Send everything you will not need in your final week, travel light, and have your boxes arrive at or just after your move-in date. Shipping after you arrive works if someone can pack and drop off for you, or your new place is not ready. Either way, confirm someone can receive the boxes at the destination address.
Is it cheaper to ship boxes or check extra bags on a flight?
Shipping is usually cheaper once you pass one or two extra bags. Airline overweight and excess baggage fees stack up fast per bag per leg, and you still have to physically handle everything through the airport and baggage claim. Shipping boxes at a per-box rate, dropped off before you fly, removes both the fees and the hauling.
Can you check a box as luggage? covers the airline rules and fees.
What is not allowed in a shipped moving box?
Electronics with built-in batteries are the one people miss: laptops, tablets and phones are prohibited under carrier lithium-battery rules, so carry those with you. Also excluded are flammables and aerosols, paint, propane, lighter fluid, alcohol and anything containing it such as perfume and hand sanitizer, medications and vitamins, perishable food and plants, cash and jewelry, and anything over the 100 pound per item ceiling. Furniture and mattresses do not ship in boxes either. See the full list on our what you can ship page.
