Road Trips Away From Home Within the USA

Have you been itching for a road trip? Some of the best memories are made in transit with bad karaoke, snacks, and breathtaking scenery.

But why just limit yourself to your part of the country when there’s so much to see within the United States! There are so many AMAZING road trips you can take. All you have to do is book a flight somewhere, rent a cheap car, and explore a new part of the country. Why do one trip, when you can do two?

Here are some ideas for fun trips this spring!

  • San Fran ➡️ Lake Tahoe

    Step 1: Fly into San Francisco, CA!
    Step 2 (optional but recommended!): spend a few days in San Fran and take in the sights. You can’t leave without taking a picture in front of the Golden Gate Bridge!
    Step 3: Rent a cheap car and road trip to South Lake Tahoe, California (4-hour drive)!
    Step 4: Take a lunch break in Sacramento, which on the way!
    Step 5: Spend a weekend or longer in Lake Tahoe and take in the amazing ocean views. Enjoy fun actives such as jet skiing, golfing, or just spa-ing!
    Step 6: Drop off your car.
    Step 7: Fly out of Lake Tahoe, CA!

  • Chicago ➡️Mackinac Island (Michigan)

    Step 1: Fly into Chicago, IL!
    Step 2 (optional but recommended!): spend a few days in Chicago. Make sure to try Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza and stroll down Michigan Avenue.
    Step 3: Rent a cheap car and road trip to Mackinac Island (7-hour drive)!
    Step 4: Make sure to take breaks because it’s about a 7-hr drive. Consider stopping by Ludington, MI to see the historic lighthouses!
    Step 5: Either book a hotel outside of Mackinac Island or on the Island, itself. You’ll need to take a ferry to get on the Island and no cars are allowed!
    Step 6: Drop off your car.
    Step 7: Fly out of the Pellston, Michigan airport!

  • Dallas ➡️Austin

    Step 1: Fly into Dallas, TX!
    Step 2 (optional but recommended!): spend a few days in Dallas. Make sure to check out the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and the Dallas Museum of Art.
    Step 3: Rent a cheap car and road trip to Austin (3-hour drive)
    Step 4: Stop for lunch, snacks or coffee somewhere in between!
    Step 5: Arrive at Austin, TX! Make sure to stop by 6th street for a fun night and hike up Mount Bonnell for amazing views of the city (it’s a super short hike)!
    Step 6: Drop off your car.
    Step 7: Fly out of Austin, TX!

  • New York ➡️Boston

    Step 1: Fly into NYC!
    Step 2 (optional but recommended!): spend a few days in New York. Take a stroll through Central Park, see a Broadway show, and eat all the food!
    Step 3: Rent a cheap car and road trip to Boston (4.5-hour drive).
    Step 4: Take 95 for the more scenic route, and leave early in the morning. On the way stop at either Groton, CT (US Submarine Museum) or Mystic, CT (Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport Village).
    Step 5: Arrive in Boston, Ma! Make sure to stop by Boston’s Dreamland Wax Museum (get your tickets in advance to avoid long lines). Also, walk the Freedom Trail and grab dinner at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
    Step 6: Drop off your car.
    Step 7: Fly out of Boston, MA!

  • Portland ➡️Seattle

    Step 1: Fly into Portland, OR!
    Step 2 (optional but recommended!): spend a few days in Portland. Pop into Powell’s City of Books, grab a treat at Voodoo Doughnut (be prepared for a long line), and stop by the Oregon Zoo.
    Step 3: Rent a cheap car and road trip to Seattle (3-hour drive).
    Step 4: Make a pitstop to see the Capital of Washington in Olympia.
    Step 5: Arrive in Seattle, WA! Make sure to stop by Pike Place Market, the Space Needle and take a day trip on a ferry!
    Step 6: Drop off your car.
    Step 7: Fly out of Seattle, WA!
