7 Ways To Stay In Shape On Your Next Vacay

Going on vacation and worried about breaking your fitness routine?

Whether you’re on a weight loss journey, training for a marathon or just love a killer workout, there are plenty of ways to stay in shape on your next vacay. No need to stress!

Here are 7 vacation workout hacks that’ll help you stay in shape!

  • Go for a Morning Walk/Run

Go for a morning walk or run. This is a great way to experience a new city and discover all sorts of hidden gems! If you’re a walker, grab a coffee or some water and go for a nice walk for 30-60 minutes. Who knows? You might run into a farmer’s market or cool shops along the way. If you’re a runner, lace up your running shoes and go for a quick run around the neighborhood. You may even want to see if there’s a park nearby!

  • Wear a Fitness Tracker

How about exercising all day without really trying? It’s likely that you’re going to be walking on your trip, so why not wear a Fitbit throughout your day and get those 10,000 steps in! Instead of taking an Uber, walk! In fact, you can even do a healthy challenge with your travel buddy to see who reaches their 10,000 steps first. Loser buys dinner.

  • Take a Bike Tour

There are so many bike-friendly cities, and your next vacay might just be in one of them! Many places offer bike tours and it’s a great way to experience a new destination. Not only will you discover hidden streets and feel like a local, but you’ll also get a killer workout in! Some popular bike-friendly cities include Seattle, WA; San Francisco, CA; Portland, Or; Austin, TX; and Chicago, IL.

  • Go for a Hike

Hiking is a fun activity that doesn’t have to be hard (unless you’re going uphill the entire time — and, in that case, good luck)! You’ll get a great workout in, have amazing views (photo ops!), and come across some challenges (uphill battle, anyone?). Plus, you can have a nice meal afterward and enjoy every bite guilt-free!

  • Pop into a Local Yoga Studio

While you’re exploring the city, pop into a local yoga studio and take a class! Many yoga studios offer drop-in visits. All you need is something comfortable to wear. You don’t even need shoes! Or a mat! You can usually rent one or the studio may offer complimentary mats. Stretch it out, meet some locals, and then treat yourself to a smoothie!

  • Workout in your Hotel Room/Airbnb

You don’t have to leave your hotel room or Airbnb to get a great workout in! All you need is your body and maybe a good pair of shoes. There are many workout streaming services that you can take with you on your vacation such as Beachbody on Demand or Les Mills On Demand. You can even do free PopSugar workouts that’ll give you a good sweat!

  • Hit the Hotel Gym

If your hotel has a gym, use it! A 20-minute weight training session may be all you need and you can use their equipment. Training for a marathon? Get on the treadmill. Just want to do something good for your body before you start your vacay activities? Get on on the elliptical with a killer playlist for 20-30 minutes. Here’s a little tip: the hotel gym will likely be empty or not that crowded, especially during off-peak hours. So take advantage of it. While everyone is busy vacation-ing or sleeping in, get your workout in!

  • Stay Hydrated

Always carry a water bottle with you. Even if you don’t workout for the duration of your vacation and just drink water all the time, your body will thank you. If you’re going somewhere tropical, drink water. If you’re on a flight, drink water. If you’re working out, drink water. Skip the pre-dinner cocktails and have a glass of water with lemon. And even when you’re not drinking water, eat hydrating snacks like baby carrots and watermelon (delish!).

  • Don’t Overindulge

One of the wonderful things about travel is relaxing and enjoying local cuisine. The good news? You can still indulge but compromise with yourself! Maybe inside of a side of fries, you can get a side salad or a fruit bowl. Maybe you can share a large meal with a friend. Maybe instead of a high-calorie cocktail, you opt for water or tea. How about a meal filled with yummy veggies and ice cream for dessert? Get creative and compromise. There are plenty of ways to experience food without overeating and feeling bloated the next day!

Listen to your body and find what works best for you! If you skip a few days of working out, don’t stress! You’re on vacation, so have a little fun!
